At a time when right-wing anti-immigrant rhetoric is on the rise, we re-assert our support for migrants in our city and across the world.

We are proud to be a diverse, multicultural city, home to people from a very wide variety of backgrounds. Nearly one in three Cambridge residents was born overseas, and we are far stronger for it.

As we said in the wake of last summer’s far-right riots:

“Everyone is welcome here, including people of all faiths and none, refugees, and people seeking asylum. We remain a city that is united against hate and will continue to do all we can to make sure that all our residents are able to live safely and free from fear.”

A city of sanctuary, we have long provided support to refugees and asylum seekers, from Nazi Germany, Chile, Vietnam, Syria, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Ukraine, and many other countries.

Our Labour-led City Council works with many fantastic community groups and voluntary organisations to help refugees and asylum seekers in Cambridge to feel safe and welcome.

We look forward to this year’s Refugee Week, from 16 to 22 June, which will include a packed schedule of events celebrating and supporting refugees in Cambridge and around the world, under the theme of ‘Our Home, Our Community’.
